I woke up early and headed to the
little town of Arnastapi. It has some cliffs which are teeming with
birds. So I spent the morning regretting I did not bring the birding
kit. Not really, the extra kilos would have been awful. But I did not
really make the most of the opportunity.
On the way back, I spotted a rainbow
and clambered up a hill to get a decent shot.....I hope as I have yet
to see the pictures. The rainbow made me happy, just like Dominic
does.
Breakfasted very well. It appears that
Icelanders know bacon.....very crispy, very tasty.
Well on we went up to
Snaefelljokull.....actually pronounced Sney-Fell-Jor(as in
Jordan)-Koort. The road winds up and does a 3rd of a
circle around this mountain....about 1,500m and both a glacier and
volcano. Really amazing scenes would open up at times. We wound our
way to the opposite side of the peninsula stopping at a few locations
to get a closer look at stuff.
We stopped at a place called Raudhull,
we knew it meant Red Hill because that was what we were looking at.
It is an old volcano, went to walk around it, but we saw someone stop
and hover by our car suspiciously. They also drove off
vvvvveeeeerrrrryyyyyyy slowly, when we were watching them. Marjan
went back to protect the car, I checked out the crater. It turns out
they were checking out the information sign.....whew....
Had a look at Londrangar, and the birds
along the cliffs there.
Then on to Kirkjofrllfoss. I
particularly wanted to see this as I have seen some amazing photos
set here. It was nice and we picnicked by the water.....but in our
car. It was coolish.
Then on to Stikkisholmur where we
caught the ferry to the West Fjords after a brief walk around town.
Had a brief moment of drama when the car slipped back an inch or two
in the ferry......the handbrake is problematic......really.....ask
Marjan. Anyway I bumped the car behind and the driver was a little
agitated. I did not see any damage so said that and walked away.
Apparently the other driver was a little distressed and wondered if
in fact there had been damage. Anyway after a conversation with his
wife and then another with both he and she we managed to find out a
lot about great sites to see sea eagles, and he calmed down. When we
got out of the ferry we stopped to check out the cars.....no
damage....but an interesting interlude with Lillian and Smauri.
Oh yeah, almost forgot....three hours on a ferry and Marjan did not get sea sick. She stood in the wind, in ALL of her clothes and managed to do the trip without problem.
Anyway...off we drove....the ferry had
run slow and we had a way to go. We went...through amazing
countryside......cliffs and water dominated of course. However when
we turned off the major road the scenery, which was if anything more
stunning, was the least of our concerns. Marjan was driving on an
unpaved, rutted, narrow road with an almost perpendicular wall of
loosish rocks and gravel to the left and an almost sheer, unfenced,
20 metre drop to the fjord. Marjan drove with white knuckles and I
pretended not to be envisioning us in the bottom of Patrick’s Fjord
(Patreksfjordu). It got better when we came across a grader that was
making a slippery mound of gravel along the middle of this
superhighway. The road did not improve, though it changed, until we
got to our accommodation in the middle of a shallow bay...precisely
4m above sea level. Apparently this was, according to Lillian, once a
home for 'bad boys' We have one of the cells.....but it has a nice
view.
Bye for now, its time for bed.....or as
Marjan puts it....this friggin daylight is going on forever.

"in a sleeping bag" Heheheh.
Hello Raf
Your shorebirds are both juveniles, probably 5 or so weeks old.
First is a Common Ringed Plover, second is a Common Redshank.
Nice Pics. Cheers, Dan
