To The capital of the north

We set off on what could be described as an arctic loop. We essentially rounded two very northerly peninsulas, including a town that claims it is the most northerly in Iceland.....disputed by a smaller place we may yet visit. So north from Sauðárkrókur through a rolling valley and busy agricultural land.

The land around here is flatter and appears to be older. Some parts are not dissimilar to parts of the Great Ocean Road, but without trees. We found a lovely spot to watch some gulls wheeling in the sky. It was on private land, but the farmer had kindly placed some steps to get us over the barbed wire.

Kept going around the Skagi peninsula, stopping occasionally to see the sights. Having the odd confrontation with the mad local sheep. This one gave us the evil eye, one just stood there staring and daring us to run him over, the funniest by far though was when three started charging us inside one of Iceland's one lane tunnels though the mountains. We really thought they would head-butt us. The one way tunnel system works, but NOT with sheep obviously.

The loop took us back to Sauðárkrókur where we moved across the fjord for lunch with a view and on to the next peninsula. we really enjoyed visiting the little towns along the way: Hofsos, Sigulfjordur, Olafsfjordur, and Davlik.

Everywhere was mountains, sea and farming.

At one point we stopped to have a look at the pattern the outgoing tide was making and spotted some Italians grazing for wild huckleberries. I did not try any, as the Italians seemed to be getting very exuberant.......even for Italians. Skipping, and spinning around is fine for kids, but not for adults.......harrumph!

Finally after about 12km of tunnels through the mountains we made it to the run up the Eyjafjordur to Akureyri, where we ran into an extremely helpful hotel receptionist who booked our whale watch trip for Wednesday and pointed out the good eating places. This town of 17k has several (about 5) museums and like Reykjavic, some awesome bookstores.

And just to show you the road situation back at the West Fjords, a photo Marjan took with the phone whilst driving out

I continue to be wildly envious of the beautiful scenery. You should have eaten those huckleberries though. :)
