It was 35C when we finished our bike ride today at 10:30. It got to 38, I believe. Tomorrow is going to be hotter. The days after hotter again, with a cool change predicated for Saturday......35C. Hence we are turning crepuscular. We do things around dawn and dusk.
I was up before 5 to head off for the sunrise shots of Uluru. Yes...another cliche. A pretty one, even though it was shared with busloads of coffee sucking seniors and prime spot stealing back packing, drug addled.......ok.ok.ok they were not that bad, they just had all the prime spots because they are connected and on-line.

After that I went and got Marjan who had declined my kind invitation to wake up in the dark. She complains that I make her DO things on holidays.
We hired some bikes and rode around Uluru. I think the walk is about 10k, so the ride is probably 14k allowing for the distance from the Cultural Centre car park. We had our camel packs, thanks again my lovely girls, so we were good to go. It was probably 7:45 when we started. Probably mid twenties by then. The first part of the ride was shady, but after that shade was a precious commodity.
It was fascinating to see the detail around the Base Walk. Both the details in the rock itself (creases, gullies, holes, boulders etc) and in the flora and fauna (waterholes with river red gums, cool grottos, open harsh sunlit areas).
Some details even daliesque...........is that a skull blowing a raspberry?
It was hot though and Marjan was succumbing by about three quarters of the way around. I think she did not drink enough, she thinks I should pull my head in. We have agreed to compromise and blame me.
We came back and had a cooked meal at lunch time, followed by a nap(me)/rest(Marjan) and a nice dip in the pool. We are now making some sangers to take to a sunset look at the Olgas (Kata Tjuta). No serious exercise so we should be right.
I think the activity in the morning and evening with a rest in the middle of the day is the only way we will cope with the heat. Luckily our room is lovely and cool, a pool is lovely and close and we will maintain a sensible approach to hydration. No alcohol, except on the dinner under the stars evening.
By the way it was interesting to look at the faces of the walkers as we rode around. Many were obviously not ready for the heat and looked like this was the epitome of torture. Of particular note was a young German couple and their parents. They were a third of the way around and looked like they should call for a taxi. They were each carrying a 600ml bottle of water. I suspect that was their concession to the notices to hydrate. I don't think Europeans get it.
Love you all
